Dua Lipa brought one of Toronto’s homegrown talents to her second night in the city.

During the pop star’s second of two nights on the Radical Optimism tour, she brought out local singer-songwriter, Mustafa.

“Tonight is extra special for me, because one of my favourite artists, who’s also a Toronto native, dropped a record last year, and this person happens to be one of my closest friends in the world,” she shared with the crowd. “I’m very excited that for this next song, I’m gonna have a little helping hand,” which prompted the crowd to erupt in cheers.

After calling the surprise guest a “folk hero,” Mustafa joined the Grammy-winning artist on stage for a duet of his track “Name of God” off 2024’s Dunya.

While the pair have never publicly collaborated on music, they have a long-standing friendship. At a Dunya fan listening event last year, Mustafa spoke with Lipa about their dynamic.

“I actually feel so grateful to be on stage with you, considering how instrumental you’ve been for so many causes for so long”, he told the “Houdini” hitmaker. “Wallahi. I feel a deep reverence, appreciation and grace for you. I’m so proud to be alongside and in community with you.”

He continued: “You never know who’s going to appear for you. In the worst times of your life, you will see who appears through the rubble. Dua has appeared time and time again. Even when I [was] isolated for so long after my brother’s passing, you are the person that has been there for me consistently.”

Last year, the Toronto singer-songwriter was awarded the 2024 Prism Prize for the “Name of God” music video. He’s continuing to make waves in the Canadian music industry and is currently up for the Polaris Music Prize and the inaugural SOCAN Polaris Song Prize.

During each night of Lipa’s Radical Optimism tour, she has performed a cover song from a local artist. On Monday (September 1), Lipa performed a rendition of Nelly Furtado’s Y2K hit, “I’m Like a Bird.”
