$600K Humboldt Broncos Tribute Concert Wins Slaight Humanitarian Award

By FYI Staff

The Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) Board of Directors has announced the presentation of the 2018 Slaight Music Humanitarian Award to The Country Thunder Humboldt Broncos Tribute Concert. Given out annually, the Slaight Music Humanitarian Award distinguishes those who have made an outstanding contribution of time and energy in support of humanitarian causes, and 2018 will highlight the admirable work of Troy Vollhoffer and the Country Thunder team in support of Humboldt Broncos families.

Held at the SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon on April 27, The Country Thunder Humboldt Broncos Tribute Concert raised more than $600,000 in support of families affected by the devastating Humboldt Broncos bus crash in which 16 people lost their lives, and 13 players were injured. The fundraised dollars were divided between the 29 affected families, the Humboldt Strong Community Foundation and SJHL Assistance Fund.

The Country Thunder Festival and the Country Thunder Foundation recognized the need to support a community devastated by loss. Working alongside the Canadian country music industry, the two organizations brought together Canada’s biggest names in country music a mere three weeks after the accident.

“Troy Vollhoffer’s eagerness to help families affected by the accident radiates true compassion,” said Ted Ellis, Chair, CCMA Board of Directors, in a press release.  “We are proud and honoured to celebrate him, the Country Thunder team and the Country Thunder Foundation for their efforts in bringing hope to their community.”

“My father Allan Slaight truly believed in giving back to the community, and The Country Thunder Humboldt Broncos Tribute Concert was an exceptional demonstration of what is possible when people come together in support of others,” said Gary Slaight, President and CEO of Slaight Communications. “Being able to celebrate the unparalleled generosity of Country Thunder, the Country Thunder Foundation and all involved by presenting them with this recognition is exactly what we had in mind when creating the Slaight Music Humanitarian Award in my father’s honour.”
