Boy Golden & Cat Clyde
At No. 40, it marks the Winnipeg native’s second song on the chart joining "Suffer," which remains in the top 3 in its 29th week. This week, Arkells and Portugal. The Man’s “Money” hits a new peak on that same chart at No. 3.
Boy Golden is adding to his successful run on the Billboard Canada Airplay charts.
The single from the Winnipeg native, “Cowboy Dreams,” featuring Ontario singer-songwriter Cat Clyde, arrives on the Billboard Canada Modern Rock Airplay chart at No. 40.
It’s a magnetic duet that builds from subtle funk to a frenzied indie rock climax. It’s clear the sensual track could only exist with two voices, as Clyde’s keyed-in harmonies bring the track to new heights, as the duo’s vocals climb over each other every time the jangling guitar riff subsides, with both singers delivering earnest declarations of love.
“Everyone you meet is a mirror, showing you some part of yourself, Boy Golden, born Liam Duncan, says. “Cat shows me a part of myself that I really like; a more free, more creative, bolder version of myself. I think that comes through in this song. Her harmony, which runs through the entire song, is perfect.”
Clyde echoes a similar sentiment: “During one of our collaborative sessions, he brought this to the table, with a substantial amount of lyrics. It felt excitingly obvious to me which lines felt really strong and in what order they were asking to fall, to tell a cohesive and complete story.”
Both artists appear in the song’s equestrian-themed video, which pays homage to Sade’s 1986 pop-R&B classic, “Never As Good As the First Time.” Duncan shares that he spent a month taking riding lessons, which evidently paid off.
“Cowboy Dreams” is the second track from Boy Golden to land on the Modern Rock chart. His chart-topping hit “Suffer” is at No. 2 in its 29th week on the chart, including many weeks at No. 1. Both songs appear on this year's Best of Our Possible Lives, which is out now via Six Shooter Records.
Arkells & Portugal. The Man are showing listeners the “Money” as their collaborative track rises to No. 3 on Modern Rock, and No. 38 on Hot AC. This week, it also debuts on Mainstream Rock at No. 32.
Back in January, “Money” debuted on the Modern Rock chart. Fueled by upbeat synths and a bubbling bass, the groovy track unpacks the complicated relationship that society has with money. The song’s complex themes are masked by alt-pop soundscapes that may seem jarring, but it softens the blow of such an existential topic.
“There are so many invisible forces that guide us, and we're trying to keep money from sitting too high on the list,” frontman Max Kerman explains. “We felt like the song was almost there when we realized John from Portugal. The Man — our favourite American with a streak of rebellion — was exactly the voice to bring it home.”
The track marks the first-ever collaboration between the Hamilton group and the Oregon rock band — and it’s clearly striking a chord with listeners.
Arkells and Boy Golden fall just short of No. 1, where Noah Kahan’s “The Great Divide" has spent almost a month at the top.
Following two nostalgic Coachella sets, Justin Bieber’s “Yukon” arrives at No. 40 on All-Format. Meanwhile, country singer Dean Brody hits No. 44 with “A Man Without A Woman.” On CHR/Top 40, Jamie Fine finds solace in “Cups Of Coffee” at No. 37. Tyler Shaw runs to No. 28 on Hot AC with “Run To You,” and Tyler Joe Miller’s “Under The Influence” at No. 45 on Canada Country.
Bruno Mars’ “I Just Might” shatters all uncertainty, as the pop singer takes the top spot on All-Format, AC, CHR/Top 40 and Hot AC. On the latter chart, Taylor Swift’s shiny “Opalite” climbs to No. 2, potentially threatening Mars’ reign.
On Country, Luke Combs is “Sleepless In A Hotel Room” for another week at the top, while The Black Keys maintain the No. 1 spot on Mainstream Rock with “You Got To Lose.”
