The abbreviation "TEA" is a term used to describe the sale of music downloads or singles. A track equivalent album is equal to 10 tracks, or 10 songs.
Afrofest
While the park allowed 17,000 attendees in previous years, festival organizers said the city’s capacity limits decreased to 5,000. This year’s edition was intended to run from Aug. 14 to 16, but organizers shared they will return in 2027 at a new event space.
The 38th edition of Afrofest has been cancelled in Toronto.
Music Africa, the organizers of the annual African music festival, announced the news on its website and social media platforms, explaining that the cancellation was due to capacity limits at its venue, Woodbine Park. This year’s edition was slated for Aug. 14 to 16.
The outdoor space’s “long-standing capacity” has been 17,000, but organizers said, “the city advised that the site’s operational limit for this year would be 5,000 attendees.” According to organizers, Afrofest “regularly attracts” up to 40,000 attendees in a single day.
In 1989, the festival was launched near Queen's Park, where it remained until 2012, when organizers moved it to Woodbine Park. The festival has become known for featuring genre-spanning musical acts representing different African communities, including Tich Maredza Band, Shina Peters, X-Maleya and more.
“Even with our 2026 planned improved safety initiatives, including ticketing, fencing, controlled entry and enhanced security measures, thousands more would still travel to the park expecting to attend,” Music Africa explained in a statement. “This presents a public safety risk outside the festival gates that cannot be responsibly managed.”
Though no specific date was given, organizers revealed that “earlier this year,” they submitted their permit application and began working with the city’s Parks, Forestry & Recreation team to clarify requirements for its 2026 event.
Reportedly, final confirmation was not received until June, which created major time constraints for the festival. Music Africa shared that Mayor Olivia Chow’s office got involved to assist with the logistics of the event, but it didn’t solve the biggest issue. “Despite this collaboration, a critical challenge remained: the operational capacity of Woodbine Park.”
Organizers explored other potential solutions to move the event to a different location, but even “site visits and operational assessments” didn't give them enough time to relocate the festival under their timeline.
“Proceeding under these conditions would jeopardize the safety of patrons, volunteers, artists, vendors, and staff and compromise the integrity of a festival built over decades,” organizers said, explaining that “this decision reflects a commitment to public safety and to delivering the high‑quality festival experience the community deserves.”
Although this year’s edition has been cancelled, Afrofest shared that they’ll be returning in 2027, working with the city and event partners to “secure a larger, more suitable venue and strengthen the infrastructure,” for future attendees.
Extending gratitude to its community, Music Africa ended on a high note: “The organization’s goal is clear: to return in 2027 stronger, safe and more sustainable.”
Still, some attendees have expressed disappointment about its 2026 cancellation on social media.
"With Afrofest being cancelled I gotta earnestly ask, where’s the African representation on a large scale? It’s not in Toronto, I can tell you that..," wrote one user on X. "Canceling Afrofest is legitimately sad… I remember going to it with my family when it used to be at Queen’s Park and going a few years ago when it was moved to woodbine … the food, the music and the different vendors .. it was a great time," shared another X user.
Under the festival's cancellation announcement post on Instagram, one user defended the choice to move from Woodbine Park.
"Unfortunately, I think this is for the best. Last year was a disaster, multiple stampedes of thousands of people running away every 30 mins after what in the moment sounded like repeat gunshots," shared @keritingling. "People lost shoes, dropped their bags, and just ran away with their young children over and over and over again. It wasn't a good look for our people, especially in the Beaches area that has a completely homogenous (non-black) demographic."
