Cadence Weapon Updates His 'Connor McDavid' Edmonton Oilers Anthem for 2024 Stanley Cup Finals

As the Edmonton Oilers look to bring hockey glory to their city, the Canadian rapper has updated his 2017 ode to the star player, adding in some new names and some old references.

As the puck drops on the Stanley Cup finals, Edmonton-born rapper Cadence Weapon has dropped a new single calling for the Edmonton Oilers to win it all.

"Connor McDavid - 2024 Stanley Cup Version" is a remix of Cadence Weapon's 2017 track by the same name, which went viral as an ode to then-rookie player McDavid. Now, the Oilers captain has led his team to the Stanley Cup Finals, where they face off against the Florida Panthers. If they win, they would be the first Canadian team to bring home the Stanley Cup in 31 years.

In the new version, the Polaris Prize-winner swaps out the names of former team members to namecheck key players on the current roster like Evander Kane and Zach Hyman, while also throwing it back to the last time the Oilers were in the finals, in 2006. "Where were you in '06 huh? / I was on Whyte Ave. getting lit" he raps over an organ loop, referencing the fights and fires that broke out during those Stanley Cup finals.

The Polaris Prize-winner says that fans have been asking him to update the song for years, and when the Oilers secured the spot in the finals, he knew the time was right. "This is the fastest turnaround I’ve had for any song I’ve ever made," he says, "but I wanted to make sure that the fans back home had a new version to play in their trucks, at the Moss Pit and in the city, as we participate in this monumental championship series."

The song is featured in a Sportsnet video for the finals highlighting McDavid, and Cadence Weapon spontaneously flew to Edmonton over the weekend and will film a "Connor McDavid" music video this afternoon (June 10). "Meet me at the Bob and Doug McKenzie Statue at 3:30 pm if you want to be in the video!" he tweets.

Though the Oilers lost game one last night (June 8), the "Connor McDavid" remix still has time to power them to victory.

Sum 41 Scores Second Alternative Airplay No. 1 This Year With ‘Dopamine’

The band's second and third No. 1s have led over two decades after its first in 2001.

After earning its first No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart in over two decades earlier this year, Sum 41 scores another as “Dopamine” rises a spot to No. 1 on the Nov. 30-dated survey.

The song follows the two-week Alternative Airplay command for “Landmines” in March. The latter led 22 years, five months and three weeks after Sum 41’s first No. 1, “Fat Lip,” in August 2001, rewriting the record for the longest break between rulers for an act in the chart’s 36-year history. It shattered the previous best test of patience, held by The Killers, who waited 13 years and six months between the reigns of “When You Were Young” in 2006 and “Caution” in 2020.
