Album of the Week: Islands, What Occurs

Since releasing a well-received debut in 2006, indie rockers Islands have certainly been prolific. What Occurs is the band's 10th album, following last year's And That's Why Dolphins Lost Their Legs, and the group remains led by singer-songwriter-guitarist Nick Thorburn, the sole original member (brothers Evan and Geordie Gordon have been in the lineup since 2009) and a former member of Montreal cult favourite The Unicorns. The new album was recorded in a spontaneous fashion in a Vancouver Island studio, and it captures their quirky charm, incorporating jaunty piano and guitars, witty lyrics and, on "Boll Weevil," retro keyboards sound that sound both cheesy and charming. Other song titles include "Arachnophobia" and "David Geffen's Jackson Pollock" so you can expect more offbeat humour. As well as digitally, the record is available in a limited edition (1,000 copies) of 12" Gold-coloured vinyl via Bandcamp.
