SOCAN is turning 100, and the music rights agency celebrated last night (May 4) by giving away more than 100 awards.

The 34th edition of the SOCAN Gala lit up the TOHU in Montreal, showcasing excellence in songwriting, composition and music publishing. Over 100 awards were presented to creators and industry professionals in Quebec in 29 different categories.

The evening blended award presentations, tributes and live performances, with a room full of major figures from the Canadian Francophone music scene. It was hosted by Rebecca Makonnen and with musical direction by Chloé Lacasse.

The big winners were Charlotte Cardin, Cristobal Tapia de Veer and the duo Roxane Bruneau and Mathieu Brisset, who each walked away with three trophies.

Cardin, who recently represented Canada as a Global Woman of the Year at Billboard Women in Music, added to her distinctions. She was named Songwriter of the Year, while her tracks "Feel Good" and "Confetti" were also awarded as Francophone and Anglophone Popular Songs of the Year.

Roxane Bruneau and Mathieu Brisset, meanwhile, took home multiple awards, including No. 1 SOCAN honours for their songs "Si jamais on me cherche," "Partout," "Le blanc des yeux," and "Une bouteille à la mer."

The International Award went to superstar producer Kaytranada, whose influence has spread well beyond his hometown of Montreal. He was treated to a surprise tribute, in the form of a video featuring artists from London, Paris and Los Angeles praising his unparalleled global influence.

The evening kicked off with La Zarra’s performance of "Évidemment," awarded the International Song of the Year, followed by a speech from SOCAN CEO Jennifer Brown, who honoured the legacy of Quebec’s copyright pioneers, such as Diane Juster and Luc Plamondon.

Other highlights included the Lifetime Achievement Award given to Diane Juster, accompanied by a moving performance of "Ce matin" by Marie-Denise Pelletier, and Richard Séguin’s induction into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, celebrated with a heartfelt medley performed by Luce Dufault, Jorane, Vincent Vallières and others.

FYI

Obituaries: Singer/Activist Jill Sobule, The Alarm's Mike Peters, Hall of Famer Joe Louis Walker

This week we also acknowledge the passing of jazz vocalist Andy Bey, English folk artist Wizz Jones and former Savoy Brown singer Chris Youlden.

Jill Sobule, the acclaimed U.S. folk-pop singer and human rights activist, died in a house fire on May 1. She was 66 years old.

A Billboard obituary notes that "The groundbreaking artist, who identified as bisexual, began her career with her 1990 debut album Things Here Are Different. Five years later, she broke out with her self-titled 1995 album and its hit single 'I Kissed a Girl,' which peaked at No. 67 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached the top 20 of the Alternative Airplay chart (then known as Modern Rock Tracks). Meanwhile, the LP’s other big single, 'Supermodel,' was included on the soundtrack to Clueless.
