He may have been absent from the 2026 CCMA Awards show held in Saskatoon on Saturday night (Sept. 19), but Cameron Whitcomb made his presence felt.
The 23-year-old B.C. singer-songwriter reaffirmed his status as Canada's hottest current country music star by winning three major awards: album of the year (for The Hard Way), male artist of the year and entertainer of the year.
A breakout chart success, Whitcomb has held the No. 3 spot on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 for multiple weeks with his biggest hit yet, "Kingdom of Fear." It's clear he is a big star in the making.
Also having a great night at the Sasktel Centre were the James Barker Band. They served as hosts for the big show, collected trophies in the group or duo of the year (for an impressive fourth straight year) and fan's choice categories and launched the show with a spirited medley of Canadian country hits.
Other notable winners included Meghan Patrick (female artist of the year), Sully Burrows (breakthrough artist of the year,) Nate Haller and Tenille Townes (musical collaboration of the year for “Backfire”), Thelma & James (video of the year for “Parking Lot Prayers'' ) and Josh Ross (single of the year for “Hate How You Look,'' his third consecutive win in this category).
This year’s nominees were led by Josh Ross and Cameron Whitcomb, who both had six nominations each and were the most-nominated acts for a second consecutive year. Check the full list of nominees here.
Whitcomb may have been unable to attend, but a star-studded grouping of major Canadian artists took to the stage during the evening for the 44th annual edition of the awards. That list of performers included winners Nate Haller, Tenille Townes, Thelma & James and James Barker Band, alongside High Valley, folk-rockers The Strumbellas, Brett Kissel, Dean Brody, The Reklaws and Owen Riegling, plus homegrown Saskatchewan favourites Tenille Arts, Hunter Brothers, Kalsey Kulyk and Jess Moskaluke.
Moskaluke was part of a show highlight when she was surprised onstage with a tears-inducing invitation to make her performance debut at famed Nashville country music institution the Grand Ole Opry on Oct. 29 in what is likely to be a career high point for the well-established singer-songwriter.
Another awards show highlight came when another Nashville legend, the recently departed icon Dolly Parton, was honoured with a special tribute segment featuring four Canadian stars, Sacha, Madeline Merlo, Tyler Joe Miller and Brett Kissel. The beloved Parton died of cancer last month at age 80.
Similarly delivering an emotional punch on the show was a performance by Brayden Camrud, a survivor of the tragic 2018 Humboldt Broncos bus crash that devastated Saskatchewan.
The night before the main awards show, the 2026 CCMA Music industry gala presented 31 awards.
Hosted by country music veteran Jackie Rae Greening, that evening featured the 2026 Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame inductions of The Wilkinsons and Ron Kitchener and saw Brett Kissel and W. Brett Wilson honoured as the 2026 Gary Slaight Humanitarian Award co-recipients. Natalie Waller recognized with the 2026 Leonard T. Rambeau International Award.
This year also marked the inaugural presentation of the International Industry Person of the Year Award, with Big Loud’s Seth England earning the honour.
The gala featured performances from Dean Brody, Morgan Griffiths, Brett Kissel, Madeline Merlo, Tyler Joe Miller and The Wilkinsons.
