A Shania Twain Biopic Is in Production at Sony Pictures

A Shania Twain biopic is coming soon.

Per a Deadline report, the global country-pop singer will produce the Sony Pictures project, currently titled Shania, along with writer-director Leah McKendrick and producer Amy Karp.

While plot details are under wraps, it’s confirmed that Twain’s life story will be the focus. According to the publication, McKendrick’s past work as a pop singer-songwriter played a major role in helping her land the double-duty gig.

“Long before I was making movies, I was shooting Shania music videos in my bedroom. This wild-hearted force of a woman means so much to me - and the world,” McKendrick said on social media following the Deadline announcement.

Of the opportunity to work with singer, the film director shares that it’s “a surreal dream come true to get to bring her trailblazing, gut-punching, awe-inspiring story to the screen.” Twain commented: “🥰” in the comment section.

The news of Shania, coincides with the Canadian icon’s musical comeback. Last month, she teased a new single, her first in three years. That track was “Dirty Rosie,” the lead song from her forthcoming album, Little Miss Twain, set to be released next month. It’s already making waves, arriving at No. 57 on the June 6-dated Billboard Canada Country Airplay chart.

Twain has already teased what the sound of the record will be like, describing it as “reflective” of the music she listened to in her teen years, with “the energy of the rock and R&B” but will still include “that Western twang,” she confirms.

Little Miss Twain is a follow-up to 2023’s Queen of Me, her sixth top 10 album on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart, which peaked at No. 2 on the Feb. 18-dated chart.

This isn’t the first time Twain has been the focus of a film. In 2022, the singer’s Netflix documentary Not Just a Girl hit the streaming service. The Joss Crowley-directed project detailed Twain's childhood growing up in Timmins, Ontario, and how contracting Lyme disease affected her career in the early aughts.

It was accompanied by a soundtrack of the same name, which peaked at No. 49 on the Canadian Albums chart, remaining on the ranking for nine weeks.

In the last year, Twain has dipped her toe into the film industry, playing a small role in the TIFF-premiering film Easy’s Waltz alongside Simon Rex, Kate Mara and more.
