Album of The Week: Wine Lips, Super Mega Ultra

Since forming in 2015 with core members guitarist/songwriter Cam Hilborn and drummer Aurora Evans, this Toronto-based band has won fans internationally with a fiery sound they call “garage punk psych rock.” New album Super Mega Ultra is released on April 5, and advance cuts “Stimulation” and “Derailer” have already grabbed attention. Recorded by Simon Larochette at Ontario studio The Sugar Shack in Ontario, SMU features the band somewhat stretching out musically, as on the angular post-punk of "Serotonin," but never at the expense of its signature high-energy and hookability. Wine Lips’ third full-length, 2021’s Mushroom Death Sex Bummer Party, really broke the band, generating almost 20 million Spotify spins and scoring major film and TV placements. Iggy Pop is a fan, which is just about all you need to know.
