Lucy Dacus surprised fans by bringing out Chappell Roan during a benefit concert for Sudan and Palestine relief efforts in Los Angeles.

During her set at the Artists for Aid show at the Shrine Auditorium on Saturday (Jan. 10), the singer-songwriter invited Roan onstage for a cover of the Magnetic Fields’ “The Book of Love.”

“My friend cold FaceTimed me a few days ago and said, ‘Can I come sing with you at the show?’ So I’d like to invite my friend Chappell Roan to the stage,” Dacus told the crowd, which erupted in cheers.

The Boygenius member added that the pair “picked a song that we both really love” before launching into the emotional indie pop ballad from the Magnetic Fields’ 1999 album, 69 Love Songs. The track was later covered by Peter Gabriel on 2010’s Scratch My Back.

The third edition of activist Mustafa’s Artists for Aid also featured performances by Shawn Mendes, Clairo, Faye Webster, Blood Orange, Jazmine Sullivan and Geese. Additional guests included Noname, Daniel Caesar, 070 Shake, Rayvn Lenae, Omar Apollo and Mustafa.

The inaugural Artists for Aid benefit took place in New Jersey in 2024, followed by the second in London last July. Hosted by actor Pedro Pascal and model Bella Hadid, Saturday’s L.A. show aimed to raise funds for the Sudanese American Physicians Association and the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund.

“A gratitude unfeigned for all these artists who have agreed to donate their time & voices to this, the journey here has not been a simple one,” Mustafa wrote on Instagram when announcing the event last November.
