Jessie Reyez and Calvin Harris' 'Ocean' Hits the Billboard Canada Airplay Chart

Calvin Harris and Jessie Reyez are back.
The Scottish DJ and the Canadian singer's newest collaboration, “Ocean,” arrives at No. 38 on the Billboard Canada CHR/Top 40 Airplay chart, dated October 4.
According to Billboard, the track has been bubbling for years, initially featuring vocals from Miley Cyrus. Co-written by Harris and Reyez, the former teased a snippet of this early version last year, but recently shared that Cyrus’ iteration of the track will never be released.
As Reyez — who received last year's Trailblazer Award at Billboard Canada Women in Music — steps into the spotlight on the track, her delicate voice dancing over an urgently pretty production, into which the experimental Harris weaves in guitar and light flourishes that will put listeners in a trance.
“This isn’t our first rodeo,” Reyez wrote of the track on social media. “It just so happens that after many years of writing for bigger artists, Calvin has decided to keep my vocals on the record,” she said to her followers.
This marks the third collaboration for the pair, after 2017’s “Hard to Love,” on Harris’ Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 — which peaked at No. 1 on Canadian Albums after its release — and 2018’s “Promises,” where Reyez provides backing vocals on the Sam Smith featuring track — it peaked at No. 15 on the Canadian Hot 100. Harris also co-produced Reyez’s 2022 song “TITO’S."
One of their most recognizable hits is one that Reyez's vocals are not on. The Canadian singer co-wrote "One Kiss" with Harris, a song that has been a signature for featured singer Dua Lipa.
In her social media post announcing "Ocean," Reyez shared a snippet of the “One Kiss” demo with her vocals.
“Ocean” is Reyez’s second track on CHR/Top 40 — after 19 weeks on the chart, “NYB” sits at No. 17. It was recently added to Hot AC, dropping 35-37 this week.
This week, Jamie Fine debuts on Hot AC with her new track, “Homesick” at No. 40.
Fine is always a champion of her hometown of Ottawa, and the track is a heartfelt look at her connection to the city and its people.
“Leaving home has always been tough for me, and coming back is what grounds and calms me the most,” explains Fine, who is now based in Toronto. “I wanted to write a song about my hometown letting me go; letting me do what I had to do elsewhere while reminding me it would always be there for me to come back to."
Over a catchy and emotionally rich pop beat, she goes beyond an ode to her hometown, reflecting on what the sense of home can mean, whether it’s a place or a person, singing: “Nothing’s gonna change/I hope you know/I’ll be ready when you’re ready to come home."
Additionally, Fine is charting on this week's All-Format, AC, CHR/Top and Hot AC with Shawn Desman for their collaboration “Body,” which sits at No. 37, No. 20, No. 29 and No. 11, respectively. The duo are embarking on a co-headline tour this November, hitting cities across the country.
This week, there’s a handful of Canadian debuts on the chart. On All-Format, Josh Ross continues his radio takeover, arriving at No. 49 with “Hate How You Look” and “As Long As There’s A Bar” from Gord Bamford debuts at No. 40 on Country.
Over on Mainstream Rock, Manitoba group GreenWing are notching a debut with “All Hard Feelings” at No. 37, and Ontario’s The Glorious Sons’ “New Plan” arrives at No. 40.
At the top, there isn’t much movement. Alex Warren’s “Ordinary” continues his No. 1 streak on All-Format, AC and Hot AC, while Canadian pop star Justin Bieber sits at the top for a second week on CHR/Top 40 with “Daisies.”
On Country, Scotty McCreery & Hootie & The Blowfish’s “Bottle Rockets” hit No. 1, knocking “Backup Plan” by Bailey Zimmerman & Luke Combs to No. 2. Mainstream Rock mainstays, Three Day Grace, hold down the top spot with “Apologies,” and Role Model’s “Sally, When the Wine Runs Out” tops this week’s Modern Rock for the fifth week.
