Art d’Ecco – Desires

The Victoria, B.C. glam rock revivalist returns with this stomping beauty, powered by a ton of Marc Bolan-esque swagger. If the rest of d’Ecco’s soon-to-arrive In Standard Definition LP sounds this good, it will be a boost that Canadian rock could certainly use right now.
Slow Down Molasses – Street Haunting

The veteran Saskatoon indie rockers came out of nowhere last week with their first new music in five years, and Street Haunting shows they haven’t lost any of their edge. In fact, the song may be even more caustic than what they’re know for, making it, by extension, more affecting.
Milla Thyme – Lost Boys

As a rising force within the Montreal hip-hop scene, Milla Thyme busts out strong with this lead track from his full-length debut album Everything Has Its Thyme. As a multi-instrumentalist as well as a rapper, his sound incorporates elements of soul and jazz, producing dynamic results.

This 18-year-old Toronto singer/songwriter born Lauren Isenberg appears to be on course for big things, judging by some recent high profile media appearances leading up to the release of her sophomore EP off saint dominique this spring. She’s certainly able to convey teen angst effectively on this gauzy track that swells to a nice conclusion, thanks to a well-placed string part.

Kyle McKearney – Annie

Although he’s found his way to the Americana genre via his prior alt-rock bands—along with a role in the Queen musical We Will Rock You—Calgary-based McKearney is so far proving he can hold his own with heavyweights like Jason Isbell and Chris Stapleton. The charming Annie is a prime example, and will be included on his debut album due out in the fall.

Virginia To Vegas – Malibu

For this latest offering, Toronto pop wunderkind Virginia To Vegas (aka Derik Baker) teams up with Swedish hitmakers NOTD, with the end product sure to satisfy both of their fan bases. As the title’s location suggests, it’s an early contender for song of the summer, but based on the much darker video, could some serious acting be in the cards for Baker?

Rochelle Jordan – Next 2 You

Raised in a Toronto household filled with the sounds of reggae, Northern Soul and UK drum ‘n bass, Rochelle Jordan combines all of those influences and more on her new album Play With The Changes, out April 30. Having toured with Jessie Ware and co-written with Childish Gambino, Jordan is already a known and respected entity in the business. With tracks like Next 2 You, her next move will be to become a household name.

Leela – Nothing Ever Hurt Like You

This up-and-coming Toronto artist makes a strong statement with her new single, a slice of sultry neo-soul written as a message of empowerment. Some nice production values really raises the drama, and hopefully Leela has a lot more just like this in the works.

Eamon McGrath – April

As one of Canada’s most dedicated road warriors, it’s been a tough year for Toronto singer/songwriter McGrath. However, he’s been trying to emerge stronger with songs that will appear on his next album Bells Of Hope, due later this year. The spacey piano ballad April captures his paradoxical feelings toward the promise of spring and regret over missed opportunities.
Art Bergmann – Your Second Amendment

With anticipation building for the Canadian legend’s new album Late Stage Empire Dementia (out May 21), he’s shared one of its rootsier tracks, one based on the epidemic of gun violence in the U.S. continues to go unchecked. The video created by Roy Pike enhances the message through juxtaposed images from classic Hollywood westerns and real-life atrocities. Powerful, to put it mildly.
