The 2020 Recap: Top Stories From FYI's Archive

By Nick Krewen

The Lord Giveth and the Covid Taketh Away.

It’s hard to argue that 2020’s top story was the sudden incursion of Covid-19, a worldwide SARS-driven pandemic that literally decimated the live music industry overnight. The trickle-down effect of shutting down worldwide travel and concert venues was immediate: the live musicians that suddenly found themselves out of work and scrambling to survive may have received the most public attention, but the behind-the-scenes workers were equally devastated.

Around St. Patrick’s Day,  promoters, agents, venues, airlines, hospitality, transport, merchandisers, suppliers, ushers, box office employees all could have used the luck of the Irish, as their income disappeared as the bills kept rolling along.

Thankfully, unlike our neighbours down South,  the Federal, Provincial and Municipal governments - along with large corporations - have stepped up with funding to help us get by, although the scale is relative, in terms of how much it is helping. Some Toronto venues, for example, were given a property tax break that had been in the works for a while and whose appearance happened to thankfully coincide with the pandemic’s arrival. But not only have they been hurt by the forced lack of patronage due to various health restrictions, but by a merciless insurance industry that decided not to renew the liability policies of many venues. Some have closed; others are hanging on by a thread, rightfully concerned about a virus that is still running rampant through the world as 2020 belches its way in 2021 with no end date in sight and no timeframe in which to expect it to end.

As we're all praying for the just-arrived vaccines to work their magic - their true effectiveness may not be known for a few months thanks to the need for double-dosing, here are some other reasons 2020 sucked; the passings of Rush drummer Neil Peart; CKOC visionary Nevin Grant, innovative guitar rocker Eddie Van Halen, A&M/Virgin/PolyGram record exec Doug Chappell; local impresario Denise Jones...and others mentioned below.

Anyhow, please enjoy the synopsis of a rather unforgiving year below - and let's all hope the sun shines a lot more brightly for the music industry - and especially the live music industry -  in 2021.

Diljit Dosanjh Has Arrived: The Rise of a Global Star
