Mike Wise has a new song production credit to add to his stacked roster of pop hits.

The Canadian producer and songwriter and co-producer credits on Olivia Rodrigo’s “Expectations,” feat. Chappell Roan, out now. It’s a reworked version of Rodrigo’s penultimate track on her third chart–topping album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in :ove, which Wise has guitar, programming, co-production and engineering credits on.

"Expectations" is charting on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100, and previously reached No. 21 on the June 27, 2026-dated chart.

On both versions, Wise shares production credits with Dan Nigro, who produced both tracks and is Rodrigo’s main collaborator on the majority of her work, including 2021’s Sour and 2023’s Guts. The updated track was written by Nigro, Rodrigo, Roan and acclaimed songwriter Amy Allen.

"I’ve been lucky to know Dan Nigro for a few years, and he’s been kind enough to bring me in on a few of his projects," Wise tells Billboard Canada.

Wise explains that he "got to help shape the production" alongside the Grammy-winning Nigro.

"When Chappell got involved, we tailored the track to her style, and her vocals took it to a whole new level," he says. "It was truly a pleasure and a privilege to be a part of such a fun song with some of the most exciting artists in the world."

The song shares the same sonic DNA as its predecessor, but the second half is supercharged with Roan’s addition, packing an even bigger punch than its original. She gets her own verse, giving the song a queer perspective. “I love making things a little gay,” she remarked during an interview with Zane Lowe. Roan’s presence throughout the rest of the track melds seamlessly with Rodrigo’s powerhouse vocals.

“More than anything, it was fun, and I think you hear that in the music," Wise says of the production process. "Olivia and Chappell both bring so much energy and character to their music, and as a producer, it’s exciting to find ways to bring that out in the track. Dan has some of the best ears and instincts in the game, and knows how to steer a song in the right direction. I was fortunate to be a part of that process and learn along the way."

On Instagram, Wise wrote that he was “incredibly grateful” to Nigro for the opportunity to co-produce the track.

Wise previously worked with Roan as a co-producer with Nigro on two tracks from her breakout album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart. Wise is credited on “Femininonemon” and “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl,” the former of which reached No. 69 on the Canadian Hot 100.

With over a decade in the industry, Wise has a stocked list of songwriting and production credits, including Charli xcx, Zara Larsson and Ellie Goulding, along with homegrown acts like Carly Rae Jepsen, Alessia Cara, Allie X, bülow and Serena Ryder.

Earlier this year, Wise and Nathan Ferraro (also his former bandmate in 2000s Canadian band The Midway State) launched Chromatica Records in partnership with Coalition Music, which they’ve described as an “artist-focused record label.” Emerging Toronto singer-songwriter Ethan Young was the label’s first signee, coinciding with the release of his single “Boring.”

The project debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 in the mid-2000s.

Cardi B loves her some Keyshia Cole. As part of her New York Times T Magazine feature about artists the publication considers its “Greats” published on Wednesday (Oct. 21), Cardi ran through plenty of her own “Greats” for a video segment, which found her naming Cole’s The Way It Is debut as the greatest album of all time.

“I was listening to that album when I was, like, 13, and I’m still listening to it when I’m 33,” she said. “Every woman should listen to that album.”
