A 2016 Mac Miller track has been crowned TikTok’s song of the summer — a decade after its release.
To kick off September, the social media platform revealed its song of the summer list in Canada, which is topped by Miller’s Ty Dolla $ign-featuring “Cinderella.”
Released over a decade ago, on 2016’s The Divine Feminine, the track has experienced a resurgence, thanks to social media. Leaning into the year’s wave of nostalgia, the song was the soundtrack to many romantic moments posted to TikTok, often used in “heartfelt photos and relationship edits.”
As of late June, the song had been used in over 13 million posts on TikTok, with many centred around the romantic lyric: “I yell your name, Cinderella / Never gonna find nobody better, all my life.” While Miller was unable to confirm the song’s meaning before his untimely death in 2018, Ariana Grande, who dated the late rapper in 2016, confirmed to People that she inspired “Cinderella.”
The song’s popularity in Canada had extended to the charts, too. On the Billboard Canadian Hot 100, “Cinderella” entered the chart 17 weeks ago and has since reached No. 29. It became Miller’s second-highest charting hit in Canada, behind his posthumous single "Good News,” which peaked at No. 14 in 2020.
“Cinderella” is followed by another mid-2010s song: Miguel’s “Damned.” With nearly 122,000 videos using the lustful track, often focused on the second verse: “‘Cause your walls are my favourite vice / Two hearts committed to hopeless fate / I’d serve my life sentence a thousand times, woman. Fittingly, the R&B singer’s 2015 hit has been an instrumental part in movie/TV edits and celebrity fancams.
While nostalgia reigned at the top of many For You pages, Canadians users were spinning hits from some of today’s biggest artists.
Drake scored two entries, with his record-breaking No. 1 hit “Janice STFU” at No. 3, and the Maneesh on the beat “Shabang” at No. 9. While the famed Canadian rapper only scores two placements on TikTok Canada’s top 10, he made up for it on Spotify, where he snagged 40 out of 50 spots on the streaming service’s most-streamed songs during the first half of 2026.
Meanwhile, Yeat, a former collaborator of Drake, reaches No. 4 with “Back Home,” a collaboration with singer-songwriter “Joji.”
Rounding out the list at No. 10 is Noah Kahan’s “End of August,” an aptly titled track to cap off the summer. A hit from Kahan’s second chart-topping album in Canada, The Great Divide, it debuted at No. 11 on the Canadian Hot 100 following its release.
A series of rising stars have landed on TikTok Canada’s list, including Alyssa Grace’s “Bloodstream” (No. 4), Malcolm Todd’s “Earrings” (No. 6), “Misery” by pupsies (No. 7) and BabyChiefDoIt’s “Ghetto Love Story” (No. 8).
Todd’s entry showcases the rise of a sleeper hit since the track was released in 2024. It’s hard to pinpoint what led to the song’s virality, but it has served as the perfect track to underscore a clip of someone yearning or lusting after another person. “The song walks through my brain as I try to reach out to someone I've lost connection with,” Todd previously said of the track’s release. It’s already a hit on the Canadian Hot 100, reaching No. 21.
