The Weeknd is once again an American Music Awards winner.

The Canadian singer took home two awards at the 51st edition of the AMAs, which took place last night (May 26) at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas following the ceremony's two-year hiatus. He won the Favorite Male R&B Artist award, as well as Favorite R&B Album for his recent effort Hurry Up Tomorrow.

Although he was unable to attend the ceremony due to being on tour in Detroit, the global superstar thanked the AMAs for the "generous award" in a recorded speech.

"I'm there in spirit. I want to thank my fans for celebrating this album and this universe that we created," he said.

He thanked his a-list collaborators Mike Dean, Oneohtrix Point Never, Max Martin and Metro Boomin, but also had words for his management and XO label team who have been with him since his early days in Toronto: Amir "Cash XO" Esmailian, La Mar Taylor and Wassim "Sal" Slaiby.

The Weeknd was also nominated for Favorite Male Pop Artist and Favorite R&B Song for "Timeless," which went to Bruno Mars and SZA's "Saturn," respectively.

The Weeknd is currently in the midst of his After Hours Til Dawn stadium tour, which kicked off its latest leg on May 9 and is set to run throughout the summer with support from Playboi Carti and Mike Dean. His Hurry Up Tomorrow film is out now.

‘Protect the Prize’: The Polaris Music Prize Undergoes Its Biggest Period of Change

Now entering its third decade, the Canadian critic’s prize has expanded its voting pool, adjusted to financial constraints and expanded to award both albums and songs. After years defined by its refined focus, the changes mark a major expansion of the organization’s mission.

In 2025, the Polaris Music Prize celebrated its 20th anniversary. Entering its third decade, the award is undergoing what might be its biggest period of change. From funding to voting process, the organization is continuing to evolve.

The cultural not-for-profit organization has spent the better part of two decades creating a space in the industry for Canadian acts to be recognized based solely artistic merit, rather than sales, genre or support from a record label. Founded in the 2000s as Canada's answer to the Mercury Prize, the organization became a registered Canadian charity in 2017.
