Five Questions With… Tara Macri

The Toronto-born, LA-based pop artist and actor is making a real splash in both fields, starring in hit musicals and charting on Billboard. Here she discusses her latest single, the balance between acting and music, and her love of all things Pink.

Five Questions With… Tara Macri

By Jason Schneider

Rising Toronto-born, LA-based pop artist Tara Macri embarks on an extraterrestrial journey with her new single “Meet Me On Mars,” available now from L.A. indie label 10 Count Records in both official and acoustic versions.

Co-written by Tara, Andrea England, and Henri Lunetta, produced by David Kim and Isaac Valens, and mixed by multiple Grammy Award winner Chris Lord-Alge, “Meet Me On Mars” is the latest addition to Tara Macri’s impressive resume, fuelled by a lifelong passion for the arts that led to roles on Broadway (Hairspray, Jersey Boys, The First Wives Club).

She also performed the role of Amber in Hairspray at the Hollywood Bowl opposite Nick Jonas and John Stamos, while at the same time voicing the character Young Tigress in the Kung Fu Panda prequel Secrets of the Scroll, also featuring Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Seth Rogan and Lucy Liu.

Tara’s music career kicked into high gear with the Billboard Top 100 charting song “Prettiest Girl in the Room,” followed by her infectious summer single “This Crush,” and the ballads “Home” and “Cardboard Castle.” Her seasonal single "Christmas For Two" has also become a perennial favourite and is once again being shared this year.

Having been born into a musical family, Tara was introduced to the piano at age two and, instantly, fell in love. From there, she dedicated her life to pursuing a career in performance. Tara’s tenacity, drive, and incomparable voice have taken her from Toronto to New York to Chicago, and ultimately Los Angeles. As a classic triple threat—singer/dancer/actress—Tara is ready to put all of those skills on display for her home country.

What makes your new single stand apart from your previous work?

I have always wanted to write a dance song and have a dance video to go along with it. For the “Meet Me On Mars” video, we got to create the first dance party on Mars!

How do you balance your music and acting careers?

I try to do a little each day, and I go back and forth between both. I try to prioritize them depending on what is happening. It's possible to do both; you just have to manage your time to fit it all in. I like going back and forth because it's creative in different ways.

What's been the most significant change in your life over the past year and what are you looking forward to in 2019?

Losing close friends and family over the last year has been the most significant change. It has made me appreciate every moment and have immense gratitude for people and opportunities. I will be releasing new music at the beginning of 2019 and am looking forward to sharing it with everyone!

What song in your catalogue means the most to you and why?

They all represent different points in my journey, but it was cool to see “Prettiest Girl In The Room” make it onto the Billboard chart and see everyone's reaction to it.

What song by another artist do you wish you had written?

Anything that P!nk puts out! I love all of the uplifting messages in her music and her melodies are so catchy.

Obituaries: Canadian Luthier Oskar Graf, Austin Music Scene Veteran Chris Gage

This week we also acknowledge the passing of Laughing Hyenas/Jesus Lizard drummer Jim Kimball and Sigue Sigue Sputnik drummer Ray Mayhew.

Oskar Graf, a renowned Canadian luthier and co-founder of the Blue Skies Music Festival, died on August 26 at the age of 81.

A 2014 profile in Frontenac News noted that "a celebrated 40-year career as one of Canada's top-notch luthiers [guitarmakers] was not the career that Oskar Graf originally planned for but he affirms that it is one that he is very grateful for. Trained in his native Germany as a cabinet maker and industrial/furniture designer, Graf, who was born in Berlin, came to Canada in 1968. He worked briefly in his trained field upon his arrival in Toronto before purchasing land not far east of Clarendon Station, where he designed and built the home and workshop that he has lived and worked in ever since.
