Canadians made big first impressions at the biggest fashion event of the year: the Met Gala.

Last night (May 4), the annual Met Gala was held in New York. This year, the fundraising benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art gathered its celebrity guests under the theme “Fashion Is Art,” celebrating this year’s spring exhibition at the Costume Institute titled “Costume Art.”

“Focusing primarily on Western art from prehistory to the present, Costume Art presents connections between garments from The Costume Institute and objects from the Museum’s other collecting areas,” reads a description of the theme on The Met’s website. “Pairings between fashions and artworks will present a spectrum of connections and experiences: from the formal to the conceptual, the aesthetic to the political, the individual to the universal, the illustrative to the symbolic, and the playful to the profound.”

This year’s Met Gala was special for Canada, as all of the Canadian attendees walked the world-renowned red carpet for the first time.

Calgary superstar Tate McRae made her Met Gala debut draped in an ornate gold dress designed by Ludovic de Saint-Sernin. The dress, which features a gold feather bra, is inspired by the golden statues that adorn La Réale, Louis XIV’s ceremonial boat, the fashion house explained in an Instagram post.

Musician, Stranger Things star and Vancouver native Finn Wolfhard attended his first Met Gala dressed by Thom Browne, a brand he's been casually wearing and supporting for a long time. The actor wore a deconstructed tailored suit, an all-white and cream outfit completed by a black wool suit jacket, as detailed in a recent interview with British GQ.

Hudson Williams of Heated Rivalry fame hit this year’s red carpet in a powder blue matador-inspired Balenciaga outfit, a look complete with eye makeup and a black cape trailing down his suit. Williams’ co-star Connor Storrie also attended this year's Met Gala off the back of the Canadian Crave series' blockbuster success.

Although Justin Bieber did not attend, his wife Hailey Bieber arrived in a custom-sculpted, 24-karat bodice and a cobalt skirt and cape, a YSL creation featuring its signature blue colour.

Katy Perry also walked this year’s red-carpet wearing a white Stella McCartney dress and a unique silver mask. She also drew attention for the six-finger glove on one of her hands, which many fans have interpreted as a commentary on AI. Her boyfriend, former Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau, was not present, but the pair were recently seen hanging out at Coachella together.
