The summer album release calendar is heading up.
Toronto singer-songwriter Meg Remy, aka U.S. Girls, a critical favourite and Polaris Prize shortlister is releasing her new album Scratch It this week. She recruited a strong group of Nashville players including Dillon Watson (D. Watusi, Savoy Motel), Jack Lawrence (The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs, Loretta Lynn), Domo Donoho on drums and harmonica legend Charlie McCoy (Elvis, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison). In just ten days, Remy and the band recorded Scratch It live off the floor with minimal overdubs, mixed to tape, old-school style. It's a max of country, gospel, garage rock, soul, disco, folk and more.

Between U.S. and British dates, U.S. Girls plays Toronto's The Mod Club (Sept. 26) and Pop Montreal (Sept. 27). Stream the U.S. Girls single "No Fruit" here.
Also out this week is a keenly-awaited new album from fast-rising Indigenous singer-songwriter Aysanabee. Edge of the Earth is his second full-length, and a press bio states that "In title and theme, Edge of the Earth is situated on the dividing lines drawn by decisions and choices made in critical moments. The songs of this collection, many borne out of conversations with friends, lovers and self, reflect on the emotional crossroads and precipices that catalyze major life changes. As a whole, the project pivots around points of no return, irrevocable breaks after which life will never be the same." Aysanabee recently announced a fall tour of Western Canada. Info here.
Also serving up new albums this week are veteran bluesman Steve Marriner, rising Punjabi-Canadian star Sultaan, with Rap God,, Montreal dream-pop singer/songwriter Meggie Lennon, with Desire Days, Indigenous artist Drives The Common Man, with Grief and Purpose, alt-pop artistAiko Tomi, with Everything Sparks Joy, soul/R&B combo Sunshine Makers, with The Sun Still Shines, hip-hop artist Andrew O. with his debut mixtape, May Baby, and double platinum-selling country star Aaron Goodvin, with Drinkin’ Hand.
