Drake Listened to Tate McRae’s ‘You Broke My First’ Ahead of His ‘20 v 1’ Kick Livestream

Drake is showing some love to Tate McRae.

During the Toronto rapper’s “20 vs 1” Kick livestream, he revealed that he listened to the singer’s breakout track “You Broke Me First” on his way to set. Released in 2020, the track marked McRae’s debut on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100, peaking at No. 8.

Drake appeared on the stream with Kyle Forgeard of the NELK Boys in a video in which he speed-dates 20 women. When asked what traits his dream girl has, he shares that he needs “somebody that’s funny and just gifted at things. They’re the top of their class. Something that I can invest into and somebody that does something and not just happy to be here.”

Forgeard joins in, sharing the criteria for his dream girl. “Honestly, I want a girl I can just like honestly chill with, slap [on] some Tate McRae, just vibe on some s–t,” to which Drizzy let out a breath.

“I love some Tater,” he says, calling McRae by a nickname. “Look what I was listening to on the way here, some OG Tater,” sharing his phone screen to show his Spotify screen.

Foregeard asks if Drake knows McRae’s track “Anything But Love,” as he quotes the lyrics “my friends hate you, my dog hates you, my dad hates you," and Drake joins in. A deluxe track off McRae’s chart-topping album So Close to What, the seething hit reached No. 22 on the Canadian Hot 100.

“I listen to Tate chopped and screwed,” he doubles down, referencing the popular hip-hop remix style.

Since the stream’s release, Drake has received some playful flak for his behaviour — notably when he barked for streamer Pinkchyu. “You can look me dead in my eyes and if you say do anything, I would,” he says with a grin. She takes him up on the offer: “Would you bark for me?” she asks. Drake obliges, barking multiple times.

While Drake has never personally collaborated with McRae, he did shout her out on “Small Town Fame,” from his 2025 collaborative album with PARTYNEXTDOOR, $ome $exy $ongs 4 U: “B—h, I feel like Tate McRae / Vanilla ice and white h–s, straight cake, uh,” he raps.

Only a few months later, McRae returned the favour during a soundcheck before her second sold-out night in Toronto. She performed a cover of the rapper’s 2011 track “Shot For Me,” later posting the clip to social media.

“Had to do a cover of shot for me by drake in Toronto,” she wrote on TikTok. In her cover, McRae swapped out the original beat for an acoustic guitar, making the rendition even more downtempo than Drake’s original. He reciprocated the love, sharing the clip to his Instagram story, with two emojis: "😮💨 🤩.”

The Drake shoutout comes a couple of days after McRae has started teasing her next era. Over the weekend, when fans searched the pop star’s name on Google, a flash of gold splatter appeared on the search results. It seems to be a callback to McRae’s recent festival performances at Osheaga and Lollapalooza, where she dipped herself in gold towards the end of her set.
