Canadian vinyl fans will be adding to their record collections this weekend.

Major Canadian acts like Neil Young, The Weeknd, The Tragically Hip and Sum 41 are all dropping special releases in partnership with Record Store Day 2024 on Saturday, April 20.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse are releasing their new double album Fu##in Up as a clear vinyl, ahead of the black vinyl wide release on April 26. The album features new versions of songs from Young's 1990 album Ragged Glory, with live recordings from Toronto club The Rivoli. Young and Crazy Horse are heading on the road in support of the album, with tour stops in Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton and Burnaby B.C. this summer.

The Tragically Hip, who are this year's Canadian Record Store Day ambassadors, also have a special release planned to mark the occasion. Live at CBGB's features nine recordings from a 1993 performance at the New York City punk venue, when the band launched their third album Fully Completely in the States. The recordings are available as of tomorrow as a 12 inch vinyl and a cassette tape, both in pink.

The Hip have other live records in their discography, but Canadian superstar The Weeknd is venturing into new territory with his first ever live album, Live at SoFi Stadium, coming out as a triple LP for Record Store Day. Recorded across two 2022 concerts in Inglewood, California, the album captures The Weeknd's After Hours Til Dawn tour, with live performances of hits like "Die For You," "Can't Feel My Face" and "Starboy."

Also coming to record stores for April 20th are an LP version of Sum 41's debut EP Half Hour of Power — following up the recent release of the band's final album, Heaven :X: Hell — as well as a vinyl picture disc release of the Barenaked Ladies' 2023 album In Flight.

Executive of the Week: Justin West of Secret City Records on the Secrets of Independent Music Success

The man behind one of Canada's most successful indie labels talks about the late-blooming success of French-language streaming record-holder Patrick Watson, why he builds long-term relationships with artists, and why it's important for the indie sector to work together.

Justin West is a leader and advocate in Canada’s independent music scene, but he didn’t plan it out that way. When he started his record label Secret City Records in Montreal in the mid-2000s, it was out of necessity. He had met an artist he loved and wanted to build a career with, and the label was a means to do it. That artist was Patrick Watson, and 20 years later he — and Secret City — are more successful than ever.

West — a multiple time Billboard Canada Power Player – leads one of the biggest indie labels in Canada while also advocating for the sector on multiple boards both locally and internationally. When we speak to him for this Executive of the Week interview, he’s just returned from Banff for the National Summit on Artificial Intelligence and Culture, and is a central figure in discussions around the Online Streaming Act and collective negotiations with online streaming platforms.
