KATO's 2010 EDM Track 'Turn The Lights Off' Hits the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 Thanks to Jon Hamm Meme

Thanks to a viral Jon Hamm meme, a 2010 EDM track has become a chart hit.
Danish DJ KATO and singer-songwriter Jon Nørgaard’s “Turn The Lights Off” debuts this week at No. 74 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100, dated Dec. 20.
The track, released 15 years ago, has all the DNA of a quintessential 2010s EDM bop — pulsating beats, euphoric synths, an undeniable hook and soaring vocals. But it’s not just the unbeatable soundscape that has captured listeners.
Like many older songs that have resurged on the charts, the revival of “Turn The Lights Off” stems from a viral TikTok trend. Users pair life’s small victories with footage of a vibed-out Jon Hamm in a nightclub from the new Apple TV+ series Your Friends & Neighbors. Currently, the audio has over 25,000 hits on the platform.
Last week, KATO put his own spin on the trend while thanking listeners for the track’s success. “This whole thing is so surreal! Thank you so much for listening and creating with the song,” he shared on social media.
An even older song is debuting on the Canadian Hot 100 for the first time — again, thanks to TikTok. Indie pop celebrity duo She & Him arrives at No. 86 with their track “I Thought I Saw Your Face Today.”
Originally released on the pair’s debut album, Volume One, in March 2008, the wistful ballad, performed by Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, has made its way onto For You pages as users pair the sombre hit with sentimental, nostalgic clips ranging from movies and TV shows to nature montages and sports highlight reels.
“I Thought I Saw Your Face Today” marks She & Him’s first-ever entry on the Canadian Hot 100. While the group never scored a major chart single during their late-2000s peak, the duo has been a part of the cultural conversation thanks to their twee ballads and stripped-down renditions of modern pop hits. They're also particularly known for their holiday songs, so it's somewhat surprising that their mid-December chart debut is not for one of their seasonal standards.
As the holidays inch closer, Canadian artists are holding strong with their festive hits. Michael Bublé’s “It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas” sits at No. 9 while “Holly Jolly Christmas” remains in its place at No. 22. Justin Bieber rises from No. 26 to No. 24 with “Mistletoe.”
While Mariah Carey's immortal "All I Want for Christmas Is You" just reached a record-breaking 20th week at No. 1 on the U.S. Hot 100, she's only at No. 2 in Canada — and she's hit a common roadblock. Taylor Swift commands the top spot for the 10th week in a row at No. 1 “The Fate of Ophelia.” The track serves as the opening track on her album, The Life of a Showgirl, also remains at No. 1 on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart for the 10th week.
Amidst the holiday takeover, Canadian artists are still making their way up the charts. Sofia Camara’s “Girls Like You” climbs 77-70, and Jamie Fine’s “homesick” sits at No. 87. Daniel Caesar re-enters the charts at No. 91 with “Who Knows,” while Tedy spends a second week at No. 92 with Billboard Canada Airplay chart hit “I Hope.” Chris Grey, R3BEL & Kryd’s collaboration “Let The World Burn (Hoodtrap / Mylancore Remix)” re-emerges at No. 95, while Nate Haller and Tenille Townes hit No. 100 with “Backfire.”
