RIP: André Previn

The famed conductor and composer André George Previn (born Andreas Ludwig Priwin) has died at the age of 89.

His management company, IMG Artists, confirmed the news.

The famed conductor and composer André George Previn (born Andreas Ludwig Priwin) has died at the age of 89.


His management company, IMG Artists, confirmed the news.

Previn was known for his career in Hollywood, his love of classical music and as a jazz pianist. He won four Academy Awards.

He won Oscars for Gigi, Porgy and Bess, Irma La Douce and My Fair Lady.

Previn was born in Berlin in 1929. His family immigrated to the United States, and he was raised in Los Angeles. In 1967, he became the music director for the Houston Symphony Orchestra and in 1968 took on the role of principal conductor for the London Symphony Orchestra.

If he wins, he’ll become the first artist to win album of the year for a work recorded entirely in Spanish and only the third Latin artist in history to win the award (following Santana for Supernatural and Brazilian guitarist João Gilberto for Getz/Gilberto, a collab with American saxophonist Stan Getz.
