Maie Pauts Is This Year’s Rosalie Award Recipient

By FYI Staff

The announcement was made earlier this week by Radio Trailblazers, an organization named after CKLW Windsor broadcaster Rosalie Trombley who, as music director at the all-powerful AM Top 40 station, was credited with breaking a hit parade of acts including Kiss and Bob Seger, and helping promote Canadian artists such as Gordon Lightfoot, The Guess Who, and Bachman-Turner Overdrive. One of the few women MDs at the time, Trombley’s run with the Canada/US border station extended from 1968 to 1984.

And this year, Maie Pauts is named the 17th Radio Trailblazer. She has been a top-rated mid-day announcer at boom 97.3 since their launch in 2010. After graduating from the Ryerson Radio and Television program in 1983, she landed her first professional radio job at CKMW Radio 790, where she worked mid-days as Music director, sales, and copywriting.

She went to CFNY 102 in ’87, where, from overnights, she moved to cohost Live in Toronto, a nightly program highlighting artists performing in town, a brief stint on mornings and then landing in her much-coveted mid-day position again from ’93 to 2001. During her time with ‘NY the Spirit of Radio or EDGE 102.1, as many know it, she interviewed countless artists, including Depeche Mode, Simple Minds, Elvis Costello, and Chrissie Hynde.

The opportunity to interview artists continued when she went to CHUM FM as a swing announcer in 2002. Her chats with Madonna, George Michael, Beyonce, Pink, Kelly Clarkson, Bryan Adams, and others were featured across Canada on the CHUM Radio Network. She also regularly sat in with the legendary Roger, Rick and Marilyn morning show at the Toronto FM.

In addition to her radio broadcast work, Pauts has worked extensively in voice-over work, including five years as the National Image for the CTV network in the late ‘90s early 2000s, as well as doing numerous tv and radio commercials for national brands.
