CMW Indies Award Noms Open For Voting

Canadian Music Week has announced the nominees for the 2018 Indies - the 18th annual Independent Music Awards - presented by Jim Beam with Indie88.


Notables include two of Canada's fastest-rising stars, R&B artist Daniel Caesar and Jessie Reyez, Iskwe and Pierre Kwenders, while the veterans include Gord Downie, Matt Mays, Death From Above 1979 and The New Pornographers, with pals Broken Social Scene and Stars duking it out in the Group of the Year category.

Performers on the show include The Rural Alberta Advantage, Said the Whale, Sam Coffey and the Iron Lungs and the winner of the Jim Beam talent search.

The shindig shakes it up at the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto on May 12. Public and industry votes decide the winners. To view the nominees and vote for your favourites, go here. The deadline to vote is May 1.

Phil Lesh, Grateful Dead Bassist, Dead at 84

"Phil brought immense joy to everyone around him and leaves behind a legacy of music and love," a statement announcing his death reads.

Phil Lesh, founding member and longtime bassist for legendary rock outfit the Grateful Dead, died on Friday (Oct. 25). He was 84 years old.

The news was announced on social media, with a statement that read, “Phil Lesh, bassist and founding member of the Grateful Dead, passed peacefully this morning. He was surrounded by his family and full of love. Phil brought immense joy to everyone around him and leaves behind a legacy of music and love. We request that you respect the Lesh family’s privacy at this time.” No cause of death was given at the time of publication.
