The four nights of the CFMAs featured award presentations alongside performances by nominees. It was announced that Cape Breton, Nova Scotia will host next year’s event. With the next submission cycle on the horizon, CFMA 2027 juror applications are set to open in May. More information here.
2026 CFMA Recipients
– The National Music Centre has announced that it has acquired items from the Gordon Lightfoot Estate Collection, ensuring that these artifacts remain preserved and publicly available in Canada. Many of Lightfoot's artifacts have been appearing in auctions over the last couple of years.
Over the years, NMC has repatriated significant artifacts, including Randy Bachman’s “American Woman” guitar and several Neil Young items previously auctioned in the U.S. Most recently, thanks to an anonymous donor, NMC has been able to secure two of Lightfoot’s plush velvet jackets (one in blue and another in green), a signature of his later live performances. NMC also obtained his RPM Gold Leaf Award for male vocalist of the year in 1971, signed performance contracts, including one for a run of shows at legendary Toronto coffeehouse The Riverboat in 1966, and an electric guitar that will be part of NMC’s living collection and be available for artists to use.
– In the world of breaking (breakdancing), it is very big news that the internationally popular Red Bull BC One World Finals in Breaking will be held for the first time ever in Canada, in Toronto on Nov. 29. To fuel nationwide interest in the event, eight of the world’s best breakers are touring Canada from April 7-18 and connecting with local communities through workshops, music jams and battles.
After recent events in Vancouver and Winnipeg, this tour hits Montreal and Toronto. The lineup is led by Vancouver-based Canadian Olympic gold medalist Phil Wizard, and also features Red Bull BC One Champion & World Final 2025 finalist Issn (Japan); Lee (Netherlands); 3x Red Bull BC One World Champion Hong10 (Korea); 4x Red Bull BC One World Champion Menno (Netherlands); 2 x Red Bull BC One World Champion & Paris Gold Medalist Ami (Japan); and Emma and Illz (Canada). Tipped as a rising young star, Canadian country artist Bradley Hale has signed an enhanced distribution deal with Canadian indie record label and management group Jayward Artist Group. This follows Hale's recent nomination for a 2026 CMAOntario Award nomination for EP/album of the year for his debut EP County Line 5. That release continues to gain traction across streaming platforms. Under the new partnership, Jayward will continue to promote and distribute music from the project while supporting upcoming releases and new material.
"We’re thrilled Bradley has joined our roster,” says Jayward Artist Group’s co-owner Jill Snell. “His songwriting is really informed by how he grew up. I was drawn to Bradley’s illustrative lyrics and his ability to blend classic country, modern country and singer-songwriter influences in such a beautiful way."
As part of this next chapter, Hale will release "County Line 5 (4x4 Mix" on April 17 via Jayward, a refresh of his EP title track mixed by multi-platinum engineer Jay Dufour. The release will be serviced to radio beginning April 15, supported by an expanded team across management, project management, and radio promotion. Hale reports that "New music is in the works with producer Brad Hill [Owen Riegling, Brothers Osborne, Maren Morris]."
Hale's show schedule includes residencies at Guelph's Stampede Ranch, plus gigs in Uxbridge, Wiarton, Owen Sound, St. Mary's and Sauble Beach. He has a showcase appearance at Departure Fest in Toronto (Adelaide Hall) on May 7. Check dates here.
When Toronto folk/roots music hub Hugh’s Room was at its original location, veteran music publicist Jane Harbury created and curated a popular series termed Discoveries. Showcasing emerging talent, the series comprised 35 shows, from 2005-2017. The series is now in different hands, but Harbury returns as guest curator for the April 23 edition, at Hugh’s Room’s Green Sanderson Hall. This show features Juno-nominated jazz pianist Ewen Farncombe (a ‘discovery’ back in 2011), pop-jazz crooner Noah Kosta, Maritime blues singer-songwriter JP LeBlanc and award-winning veteran Ontario singer-songwriter Nancy Simmonds, whose songs have been covered by the likes of Ricky Van Shelton, Alannah Myles, Quartette and Melissa Manchester.
