The Guvernment has announced the lineup of artists who will help celebrate its 30th anniversary at Rebel on Nov. 28.

It’s been just over a week since the former venue’s parent company, INK Entertainment, revealed the nightclub would reopen for one night.

The reunion will feature sets from legendary DJ Carl Cox, Mark Oliver, who served as the longtime Guvernment resident DJ until its closure in 2015 and Toronto DJ Carlo Lio. The headlining trio is slated to celebrate “the artists and sounds that played a pivotal role in shaping Toronto's nightlife history.”

Located at the city’s waterfront near Queen’s Quay, The Guvernment and its interconnected venues, including Kool Haus, The Drink, Orange Room, SkyBar and Acid Lounge, became some of Toronto’s nightlife hot spots.

The intimate venues — ranging from 2,000 to 3,000 in capacity individually, and over 10,000 in total — hosted shows for the likes of the Rolling Stones, Coldplay, Oasis, Ashanti, The Black Keys, Lady Gaga, Daft Punk and more. Homegrown hitmakers like deadmau5 and Drake held some of their first-ever shows there. It even became a hub for electronic music and artists including Tiësto, Armin van Buuren and Carl Cox, who will return next month.

This year’s reunion will pay homage to four of the venue’s most popular spaces — The Guvernment Main Room, Orange Room, Acid Lounge and The Drink. Each room will “revive the distinct sounds and atmosphere” that made the venue an anchor of Toronto’s nightlife scene.

Flipside, Greg Gow, Quim, The Crystal Method, Bad Boy Bill and Artistotle are among the artists who will perform across the latter three spaces.

"Thirty years later, its legacy still lives on in the DNA of Toronto's entertainment industry,” says Charles Khabouth, founder & CEO of INK Entertainment. “It wasn't just a nightclub; it was an institution that put Toronto on the international music map and shaped an entire generation."

After The Guvernment closed in January 2015, Daniels Waterfront took over the space and built a condo building that is home to arts and culture organizations including Daniels Artscape Launchpad and HXOUSE.

Khabouth says many people have commented that being at Rebel — an event space that INK owns — “feels like they've stepped back into The Guvernment,” so the location couldn’t have been more ideal.

“We're bringing back the music, the energy and a few nostalgic surprises,” he says. “This reunion celebrates that legacy and gives a new generation the chance to experience the magic.”
