'8 Asle' By Punjabi-Canadian Artists Sukha & Chani Nattan Among YouTube's Most Popular Songs in Canada in 2024

The sleek track, which features Gurlez Akhtar, caps off a list that also features Benson Boone, Sabrina Carpenter, and Kendrick Lamar's Drake diss "Not Like Us."

YouTube has revealed the biggest songs of the year in Canada on the platform, and for the second year in a row, Punjabi music is leading the way for Canadians on the list.

"8 Asle" by Toronto-based Punjabi artist Sukha comes in at No. 10 on the list, with 104 million views. The track features singer Gurlez Akhtar and was written by Punjabi-Canadian lyricist Chani Nattan. Nattan signed with 91 North earlier this year, the joint venture between Warner Music Canada and Warner Music India to support South Asian artists, which is clearly showing results.

Driven by a breezy guitar loop, the confident single went viral with a dance challenge and debuted at No. 55 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 in January of this year.

Like in 2023, Punjabi music is the only Canadian contribution to YouTube's Canada year-end music list. Last year, Punjabi-Canadian artists Ikky and Karan Aujla had the No. 3 and No. 8 music videos with "52 Bars" and "Take It Easy," both from their collab EP Four You. The Punjabi Wave is at the forefront of musical growth in Canada, and with industry support from initiatives like 91 North, that wave is only getting stronger.

Elsewhere on the list, Bensoon Boone unsurprisingly claims the top spot with his Canadian Hot 100 chart-topper "Beautiful Things." Shaboozey's record-breaker "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" is at No. 3, while Kendrick Lamar's Drake diss "Not Like Us" is at No. 4 (notably higher than its No. 10 placement on Spotify's year-end Canada list). Sabrina Carpenter's "Espresso" is the only solo song by a woman in the top ten.

‘Heated Rivalry’ Is Getting an Official Soundtrack — and It’s Coming Sooner Than You Think

There's no stopping Hollanov's momentum.

Heated Rivalry, the wildly popular queer hockey drama starring Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams, has taken the world by storm since its premiere in November. The Jacob Tierney-helmed Crave original (which airs on HBO Max in the States) has garnered hundreds of thousands of fans who have fallen in love with the show’s synchs and score, and they’ll soon be able to stream its official soundtrack, Billboard can exclusively confirm.

The Heated Rivalry original series soundtrack, crafted by show composer Peter Peter, will arrive on all platforms via Milan Records on Friday (Jan. 16). Fans can stream the set’s first two singles — the high-octane “Rivalry” and the tender “It’s You” — everywhere right now. Billboard can also confirm that a vinyl edition is in the works.
