The ‘90s rock band were set to play shows in Ottawa, Laval, Halifax and Moncton. This follows previous cancellations in Sault Ste. Marie, Oshawa, Hamilton and London, due to the frontman’s illness.
The Goo Goo Dolls have cancelled their remaining Canadian tour dates.
Yesterday (April 5), the New York rock band took to social media to share the news, citing frontman John Rzeznik, who has been diagnosed with pneumonia.
The group were set to perform at Ottawa’s Canadian Tire Centre (April 6), Laval’s Bell Place (April 8), Halifax’s Scotiabank Centre (April 10) and Moncton’s Avenir Centre (April 11).
While this latest announcement impacts the remaining four stops on the band’s Canadian tour, the ‘90s rockers had already called off shows in Sault Ste. Marie (March 30), Oshawa (April 1), Hamilton (April 2) and London (April 4), with Rzeznik’s illness being the catalyst.
Initially, the group cited a mysterious “illness” before revealing that Rzeznik was suffering from pneumonia. After cancelling shows in the Sault and Oshawa, they shared that they planned to perform at Hamilton’s TD Coliseum, which was later cancelled, and their scheduled stop at London’s Canada Life Place subsequently followed.
Per an announcement from the group, performing with pneumonia could have lasting effects on a singer’s voice, prompting Rzeznik to prioritize his recovery to prevent further damage.
"We're very disappointed by this decision as we hoped to finish the rest of our Canadian run," the lead singer said in a statement. "Once again, I appreciate everyone's understanding and can't wait to get back to Canada as soon as we can."
The Goo Goo Dolls kicked off their Canadian tour in March, performing at cities across Western Canada, before Rzeznik’s pneumonia came to light.
According to the band’s social media accounts, all tickets will be refunded at the point of purchase.
The “Iris” rockers, who are suddenly blowing up on social media, are set to resume touring in their home country on April 18, with shows scheduled throughout the spring and summer.
