Alexisonfire
The 2006 album enters the chart at No. 55, coinciding with the Canadian post-hardcore band’s recent shows, reissues and celebrations of its 20th anniversary. The album originally debuted at No. 1.
20 years after its release, Alexisonfire’s Crisis has re-entered the Billboard Canada charts.
The classic 2006 album from the St. Catharines, Ontario post-hardcore band arrives at No. 55 on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart, dated Aug. 29. It comes 20 years after the album first debuted at No. 1, in 2006. At the time it was released via Toronto indie label Distort Entertainment, a hub for hardcore and punk rock artists. Crisis marked their first and only chart-topping album in the band’s decades-spanning career.
Now re-released through Toronto's Dine Alone Records — co-founded one year before Crisis' release by the band's manager Joel Carriere — Crisis’ resurgence on the charts is tied to the band’s 20th anniversary celebrations for the album, including recent shows in Toronto and Montreal, where they played the album in full. The band also celebrated with an exclusive pop-up at the Dine Alone store in Toronto, including exclusive merch and various vinyl variants.
Leading up to and throughout the Crisis album cycle in 2006, Alexisonfire — comprised of Dallas Green, Wade MacNeil, George Pettit, Chris Steele and Jordan Hastings — were at their peak. Like acts including Simple Plan, Nickelback and Sum 41, Alexisonfire is one of the lucky Canadian bands to export their talents beyond their home country.
Crisis was the group’s first release after signing with U.S. record label Vagrant, in partnership with Distort Entertainment. It marked their second entry on the Canadian Albums chart, following up on 2004’s Watch! Out, which peaked at No. 6. It was the band’s first album without former drummer Jesse Ingelevics, who was replaced by U.S. musician Jordan Hastings.
The album featured some of Alexisonfire’s biggest tracks, including “This Could Be Anywhere in the World,” “Boiled Frogs” and “To a Friend.” Crisis was a major success for the group, selling over 20,000 copies in its first week. Only a year later, it was certified platinum in their home country, while “This Could Be Anywhere in the World” was certified gold in 2018 by Music Canada.
But now, the band is looking ahead. During their Crisis show at RBC Amphitheatre, they announced the completion of their untitled next album and debuted a new song, titled “Dogs of Chernobyl.”
Phoebe Bridgers scores her highest-debuting album in Canada with Lost Weekend — her first album in six years. It arrives at No. 3, a major jump from Bridgers’ previous album, 2020’s Punisher, which debuted at No. 96 and spent one week on the Canadian Albums chart.
Lost Weekend is a culmination of being in the thick of life: losing a parent, falling in love and growing up. It sees the 31-year-old singer-songwriter return with her detailed, introspective songwriting but armed with a greater sense of maturity than her previous two records.
Spanning 53 minutes and 16 tracks, Lost Weekend is arguably Bridgers’ roomiest and strangest record yet. “The music I’ve listened to the most for pleasure is probably ambient music, but I don’t even think I realized how much interstitial stuff there was on the album until it was done,” she shared.
With the release of Lost Weekend, Bridgers lands her first-ever solo tracks on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100, including “The Governor’s Waltz” (No. 74), which many have speculated is about fellow singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams. The elusive track joins “Lost Boys” (No. 84), “Bobby” (No. 85) and “Kill Me” (No. 93).
Previously, Bridgers charted with Taylor Swift on the Red (Taylor’s Version) vault track “Nothing New” in 2021, and SZA’s SOS deep cut “Ghost in the Machine” one year later.
Meanwhile, Canadian artists are faring well on this week's Canadian Hot 100. Cameron Whitcomb holds down the No. 3 spot for the second week with “Kingdom of Fear,” his highest-charting single. Drake’s “Janice STFU” rises 10-8, potentially aiming for the No. 1 spot once again.
Justin Bieber’s “Speed Demon” reaches a new peak at No. 44 in its 21st week on the chart. The same goes for Pablo Preston’s “Cause I Do,” which climbs one spot to No. 58, while TALK’s “Time Machine," jumps 10 spots to No. 64. Alex Sampson’s “Misery” is making major moves, rising from 91-75, and Dallas Smith’s “Good Times Goes” settles 10 spots higher at No. 89.
At the top, Ella Langley continues her chart-topping reign. The country singer’s hit “Choosin’ Texas” spends its 16th week at No. 1 on the Canadian Hot 100, which ties the song for the fifth longest-leading track in the chart's history alongside Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee's "Despacito," Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" and the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling."
Her sophomore album, Dandelion, climbs back to No. 1 on the Canadian Albums chart, knocking Ariana Grande’s petal out of the top spot as it falls to No. 8. Noah Kahan rises one spot to No. 2 with his previous chart-topping album, The Great Divide.
The top three of the Canadian Hot 100 remains the same as last week with "Choosin' Texas" at No. 1, Stella Lefty's "Boston" staying firm at No. 2 and Whitcomb's "Kingdom of Fear" at No. 3.
