The Canadian singer debuts the vibrant Supo Supreme-directed music video to her latest summer-ready track, which features Vancouver singer-rapper Shelailai.
LU KALA has a summer hit on her hands with “Work." Watch an exclusive first look at the music video on Billboard Canada below.
In the video, which is directed by Supo Supreme, the Canadian singer walks down the street and sits down for tea as numerous men try to court her. Her reply? “You’ve got to work,” she sings on the song’s chorus.
The song features Vancouver rapper-singer Shelailai, whose soft-spoken, melodic guest appearance perfectly complements KALA’s bold energy. The infectious pop song is backed by an upbeat bounce and playful pianos which are matched by the music video’s vivid colours and bright lighting.
"I had so much fun shooting this music video. From the looks to my glam to the men on set, they were so fun to go back and forth with," KALA tells Billboard Canada. "When it came to the driving scene, I told the director that I don’t know how to drive. So who’s gonna be driving the car? They assumed [featured singer] Shelailai would just end up driving to find out she’s just like me, a passenger princess. So someone on my team had to literally jump in the glam chair and get dolled up in 30 mins to play our friend that drove."
The Toronto singer won the inaugural Billboard Canada Women in Music Rising Star Award in 2024, and her momentum hasn't slowed. “Work” is a standout from KALA’s latest EP No Tears On This Ride, which was released on April 25.
“I hope every single person who hears ‘Work’ feels the exact same way, like babes, always remember how much time and effort you put into becoming the beautiful person you currently are,” the singer said of the song. “Why would you let anyone that’s unworthy of you come in and f-ck up your peace? Absolutely not!”
