Universal Music Canada has made a major change at the top.

Julie Adam has been promoted to president and CEO of Universal Music Canada, replacing longtime head Jeffrey Remedios.

Remedios, meanwhile, has shifted roles to president of strategic development for the major label group's REPUBLIC Collective, which includes Island, Def Jam, Mercury and Republic Records.

“Every day I wake up thinking about how best to serve and support our artists to ensure they find personal, artistic, and commercial success through music,” says Adam in a statement, also thanking Remedios, Michele Anthony and UMG CEO Lucian Grainge. “I am beyond excited to continue to work alongside the best team in the business to discover, develop, and break the next generation of artists out of Canada.

Adam previously served as executive vp and general manager of UMC since March 2023. As CEO, she’ll lead UMC's overall strategy and operations.

Before joining Universal, Adam spent nearly 24 years at Rogers Media. As president of news and entertainment, she led the strategy and oversaw the management and development of a portfolio of brands that spanned dozens of radio stations, podcast networks and TV channels. Adam is also the chair of of CARAS (The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences), which operates The Juno Awards, MusiCounts and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

Remedios came to Universal from Canadian indie label Arts & Crafts, succeeding Randy Lennox as president and CEO in 2015, and oversaw the opening of UMC's downtown Toronto office in Liberty Village. He was named to Billboard Canada's inaugural Power Players list, at No. 2 in Labels.

Remedios will now lead growth initiatives for Republic’s labels, focusing on international A&R, recording studios and brand expansion. He will work from both New York and Toronto.

“In his new role, focused on exploring and capitalizing on opportunities in emerging areas of the industry, Jeffrey will play a critical role in scaling our business and proving new creative and commercial outlets for our artists,” says Monte Lipman, chairman and CEO of Republic, in a statement.

As Billboard reported, Adam's promotion follows a similar move in Nashville just one day earlier, where Universal Music Group Nashville appointed Mike Harris new CEO and producer and nine-time Grammy winner Dave Cobb as chief creative officer.
