As President of Warner Music Canada, Kristen Burke is the only woman heading a major record label in Canada. That would be enough to warrant celebration. But Burke is not only at the top – she’s thriving at the top.
In an often-conservative music industry, Burke has led Warner to take risks that have paid off – like boosting the Punjabi Wave and forming 91 North Records with Warner Music India, and investing in artists building unique followings on social media like Crash Adams and Mother Mother.
Burke credits resilience, confidence and authenticity as the keys to navigating the industry as a woman in a top position in music, while staying committed to continuous learning. But it’s also about who you have around you, she says. “Equally important is building a strong support network and advocating for gender equality within the industry. Surround yourself with mentors, peers and allies who uplift and support you, and be ready to do the same for others.”
